Inland marine

Follow the equipment beyond its usual address.

Portable tools, prototypes and property at another location need a review of where they travel and who holds them.

Inland marine insurance can address movable property and certain property away from a fixed premises. The relevant form depends on the item and its use, so a shipment, an installation and a loaned prototype should each be described.

Trace the trip before selecting the form

Write down the collection point, storage stops and final destination. Explain whether your staff, a customer or a transport provider moves the property. Coverage boundaries may change at each handoff.

  • Regular travel and occasional demonstration trips
  • Temporary storage before installation
  • Domestic movements and any international legs

State whose property is moving

A prototype owned by your business differs from a borrowed testing instrument or equipment hired for an installation. Keep the ownership facts and the agreement allocating responsibility beside the equipment list.

  • Owned, rented and borrowed items
  • Item descriptions and support for declared values
  • The point when a customer accepts delivery

Read the conditions for use and storage

A description such as portable equipment is only a starting point. Ask about theft conditions, unattended vehicles, installation or testing restrictions, and the territory in which the form applies.

  • Scheduled items versus any blanket provision
  • Limits for a single item, location or trip
  • Deductibles and evidence needed to add equipment

A prototype leaves for a customer trial

A hardware business sends a demonstration unit to a customer and leaves it there for evaluation. Before it travels, identify who owns the unit, who transports it, where it will stay and what testing involves. A description of those stages is more useful than calling the whole movement a delivery.

These are review topics, not a statement that a particular loss is covered. Policy wording, scheduled property, limits, deductibles and exclusions determine the response.

Put the next production change on the agenda.

A new machine, outside storage or a first customer installation can change the insurance discussion. Procurement services are performed by Spot and its brokerage partners; Potrero Risk does not itself transact insurance.
