General liability

Examine the work that reaches someone else.

Consider premises activity, work at customer locations and what happens after a product leaves your control.

General liability insurance can respond to covered third-party bodily injury and property damage allegations. Manufacturing and hardware reviews need to distinguish an injury or damage allegation from a request to replace the product itself.

Describe the product and its intended use

A component supplied to another manufacturer can create a different exposure from a finished device sold directly to an end user. Include the intended applications, any installation work and the role of outside manufacturers.

  • Products sold and markets served
  • Assembly, testing and quality-control responsibilities
  • Customer installation and maintenance activities

Match contract requests to actual wording

A customer may ask for additional-insured status, particular limits or products-completed operations coverage. The request should be checked against the policy and endorsements; a certificate alone does not change coverage.

  • Supply and distribution agreement insurance clauses
  • Additional-insured wording and its conditions
  • Per-occurrence and aggregate limits

Keep repair, recall and liability questions separate

Do not assume general liability pays to recall a batch or make good on a product warranty. Exclusions and specialized coverage may be relevant. Flag contractual promises that extend beyond damage to someone else.

  • Damage to your product or your work
  • Recall and replacement expenses
  • Professional services and employee injury exclusions

A supplied part damages other equipment

A customer alleges that a component damaged its production equipment. Replacing the component and addressing the alleged damage are different issues. Keep the supply agreement, product description and relevant coverage terms together when reviewing that exposure.

These are review topics, not a statement that a particular loss is covered. Policy wording, scheduled property, limits, deductibles and exclusions determine the response.

Put the next production change on the agenda.

A new machine, outside storage or a first customer installation can change the insurance discussion. Procurement services are performed by Spot and its brokerage partners; Potrero Risk does not itself transact insurance.
